Ceramics has absorbed Sylvia for the last 16 years. Its complex processes such as materials, kiln building, studio setup and the creation of beautiful pieces put through the alchemy of heat has never ceased to surprise her and makes her want to practice more.
Sylvia Kerkar learned pottery at the Golden Bridge Pottery in 1999 and 2000 under the guidance of Ray Meeker and Deborah Smith. She has also apprenticed with Leila Bose Powar and Mike Dodd in the UK amongst others.
The influences of these artists are prominent in her mostly wood-fired work. She has since set up 2 studios, one in Goa where she lives most of the time, and one in the deep jungles of the Western Ghats on the Goa/Karnataka border.
