Born in Bangalore, India, Amrita Dhawan trained in ceramics with Mansimran and Mary Singh at Delhi Blue Pottery, New Delhi, and with Ray Meeker and Deborah Smith at Golden Bridge Pottery, Pondicherry, India.
From 1984-1999, Amrita, along with two fellow potters, ran a production pottery in Bangalore, making wood-fired functional stoneware and ceramic jewellery. She spent four years as teacher and resident artist at Meeker and Smith’s studio in Kodaikanal. She has done residencies at the Golden Bridge Pottery and at studios in Alibaug, Goa and at two potteries on the outskirts of Bangalore. Amrita participated in a six-week residency at Fuping Pottery Art Village, China, contributing work towards a permanent exhibit at the pavilion for Indian Ceramics. She has collaborated in public art installations and exhibited in solo and group shows. Amrita currently teaches basic pottery courses and produces both functional and sculptural work.
